The Flag Memorial by Octavio Tirelli

The only place in Rosario that you can’t miss is the Flag Memorial. The Flag Memorial is a symbol for Rosario, a landmark. It was opened to the public on 20 of July 1957. It is located on Santa Fe Street and on the spot where General Manuel Belgrano hoisted the national flag for the first time.

The architects that made posible this national treasure were Alejandro Bustillo and Ángel Francisco Guido. And the sculptors that made the beautiful sculptures that surround it are Alfredo Bigatti, and José Fioravanti. The flag memorial itself is not the only attraction, since it contains the hall of flags, the tower, a fountain in the back and a fire that never goes out.

The work as a whole symbolizes the country's ship sailing the seas of eternity in search of a glorious destiny. Through the different groups of sculptures the economic, spiritual, historical and geographical values of our nation are represented.

The Flag Memorial is a great place to visit because it has wonderful views, it is surrounded by parks and it is located by the Parana River. In the same area, near the Flag Memorial are also located the City Hall and the Cathedral.

So, if you are planning a picnic or looking for the most beautiful place in Rosario, the Flag Memorial is the place you are looking for.

The Paraná River is located on the East side of the city. It is second in length with 4,880 kilometers and is one of the most important rivers of Argentina and the world, for this reason it is an excellent choice for vacation or travel when visiting the City of Rosario.

The Rosario-Victoria bridge, 59,4 kilometers long, connects Rosario and Victoria in the Santa Fe Province. Thanks to the bridge, tourism in the region has also benefited from easier transportation.

Rosario-Victoria Bridge by Camila Espejo

In Rosario there are lots of beautiful places you can visit, such as the Rosario- Victoria Bridge, which joins the Argentine cities of Rosario, province of Santa Fe, and Victoria, province of Entre Rios. It’s composed by several bridges, channels and earth-filled sections. This bridge crosses the main course of the Paraná River and touches down on several islands of the Paraná Delta on this way.

The project began in 1998 but it was repeatedly interrupted due to a lack of funding from the National and the Provincial Governments. The public transit access to the bridge was opened on May 20th, 2003. The project was executed by a private company - Puentes del Litoral - which was granted subsidies from the Nacional Government and the Provincial Governments of Santa Fe and Entre Rios.

The opening of this bridge was very important because until then, the only road link between the two provinces was the Hernandarias Underwater Tunnel, which joins the cities of Santa Fe and Paraná.

Last year there was a 10 km marathon on the bridge and it was a very nice experience for the runners because they had a wonderful view while they were running and it was different from all the other marathons.

The real name of the bridge is Nuestra Señora del Rosario. It’s a beautiful place, because from there you can see the river and the islands; it also makes it easier to go from Rosario to Victoria, which is a beautiful city, full of things to do, such as going to the Thermal Spa or the Casino.

Teatro El Círculo by Carolina Díaz

Overview

El circulo theatre is located near the historical center of the city, at the intersection of Laprida and Mendoza Streets. Planned as a lyric theater, it was developed as Teatro La Opera by Emilio O. Schiffner, who purchased the society of the same name in 1889. Schiffner hired a German engineer George Goldammer, an acoustician who modified the original design, and the construction firm of Bianchi, Vila y Campania. Following delays caused by the Panic of 1890, as well as the earlier society's debts, the theatre was started in 1903.

Italian artists, directed by Luggi Levoni, decorated both the interiors and exteriors; among their notable creations was the stage curtain designed by Giuseppe Carmignani with images from Greek mythology similar to those found in the Teatro Regio di Parma. Teatro La Opera was inaugurated on June 4, 1904, with the performance of Giuseppe Verdi's Othello.

The theater received many artists from around the world, including opera, ballet, and orchestra performances. Enrico Caruso performed there in 1915, and compared its acoustic quality to that of the Metropolitan Opera House in New York.

After this phase of splendor, the theater began to decay, and by 1940 its demolition was being actively considered by the city. The abandoned catacombs underneath the theatre were converted into the Museum of Sacred Art in 1940 to house the prolific work of sculptor Eduardo Barnes. A cultural association known as El Círculo de la Biblioteca (The Library Circle), that previously gathered at the Biblioteca Argentina and needed another place for their meetings, acquired the building in 1943, preserved it, and changed its name to the present one.

The theater has a room for 1,450 people, in five levels. It currently functions mostly as a cultural center. It was fully restored for its 100th anniversary in 2004, and served as a stage for the Third International Congress of the Spanish Language. The sidewalks and the two streets around the corner of the theater were turned into a sort of plaza with an early 20th century look, using old lampposts and replacing the usual asphalted surface with cobblestones.

The theater is on the list of works and sites of patrimonial value of the Rosario, city hall.

Newell´s Old Boys Football Team by Mauro Tejada

Isaac Newell was born on April 24th, 1853 in England. Possessed of an adventurous spirit and fanaticism for football, he left his homeland at the age of 16  aboard a ship heading to Antarctica Argentina and settled in the city of Rosario.

In 1884 he founded the "Colegio Comercial Argentino Angelicano" in Rosario, institution that eventually would house the club. That same year he would bring from England the first leather ball and the first official soccer rules to Argentina, and that was when the school began to alternate study with the sport of football. In 1900 Isaac fell ill and delegated management of the college to his eldest son, Claudio. The "Club Atletico Newells Old Boys" was founded on November 3rd, 1903. It was Claudio Newell, son of Isaac, who called teachers and students of the college for an official presentation                  , as the life of his father extinguished. At the ceremony the name "Club Atletico Newell's Old Boys" ( Viejos Muchachos  de Newell) was chosen to honour the life and work of Isaac.

The  colours of the flag  were a combinarion of the flag of England (Isaac´s home) and Germany (home of his wife Anna): red and black. The task of  designing the flag was given to Ernesto Edwards, and a student of the school, had to design the  outfits for the games, then do the same with the jackets.

Both fans and players of Newell's Old Boys are known as "lepers", since  in the early twentieth century they were invited to hold a meeting to benefit leprosy patients resident in the Carrasco Hospital, with their traditional rival  football team, Rosario Cenral. The invitation was accepted immediately by Newell's Old Boys, who received the nickname of "lepers" while their opponents didn't accept the invitation, and received the label of “cold chests”. With the passing of time the nickname was more and more popular, to the point of becoming an emblem for the team.

In conclusion, if you are interested in visiting the stadium of Newell's Old Boys, it is located on 2502 Morcillo Esteban Street. It is a large, comfortable stadium and a pleasure to see. It is a nice place to encourage Newell's football team, If you like to practice other sports such as tennis and hockey, you can also do so there.
